Book Reviews for Murder at the Country Club

- Overall, I thought the mystery itself was pretty good within the confines of the country club. All the characters are distinct and mysterious. Good setting and the 'club' descriptions are good.
I only have two gripes with this novel. First is the repetition of the clues. The book often beats you over the head with the same clue stated three or even four times in a row in a short span of time which is a bit annoying.
Second is what I can only describe as rampant plot armor around our MC Jeff. He's a waiter, he serves drinks to the ultra-wealthy of the country club. Why are they responding to his demands for information on their personal lives and gossip on the others? Why are they confiding their business secrets to him? There's no explanation for why they would be so trusting with him or respond to his demands positively as if he has any authority over them.
Also most importantly, why is he so invested in all of this? He just kind of dives in to solving the case to 'root out corruption in the club' for seemingly no reason I can determine. Like, doesn't he have a job to do? Why is he so driven to get to the bottom of the mystery when he's seemingly worked there as a waiter there for years with no issue? It's just all very strange.
- While this story very quickly evolved into a treatise on justice and the abuse of power, I still found it interesting. Not sure, however, why a waiter at a country club for the rich and powerful cared so much about being mistreated without just quitting. Also, not sure why a waiter would get into a terrible argument with a corrupt club president and not be immediately fired and prevented from re-entering. Interesting read.

- I absolutely loved this mystery! Loved the setting of the country club - actually it kind or reminded me of the game Clue. I thought this setting was great for a whodunit.

- This book provides a thrilling dive into a world of privilege, deceit, and deadly secrets. The story follows Jeff, a sharp-witted server, who navigates the treacherous dynamics of an elite country club after the suspicious death of Victor Langston, a powerful board member. The book delivers suspense and unexpected twists with a plot that keeps you guessing. It's not just a gripping tale of ambition and betrayal, it shows the lengths people will go to protect their secrets. A must-read for fans of whodunits with a touch of sophistication.
- An interesting tale about bad things going on in a country club. I liked the writing. I would have preferred to see some more action points and a little less of the internal thoughts of the lead character. It would have made the tale a bit more compelling.
- The plot is captivating and packed with twists and turns that will keep you on your toes, staying clear of unnecessary complexity. I particularly appreciated how the author creates suspense, with each chapter gradually unveiling more about the vibrant array of characters, all of whom are potential suspects in the case.
- I was put-off by the square cover. It looks like an audio book, but isn't and the font is so small it's hard to read the title. I only mention this to say that I think that the author would get more readers with a standard tall-aspect rectangular cover because the way it is now is confusing and seems unprofessionally made. But the story itself is an entertaining, well-written mystery romp, with an interesting cast of characters and a good reveal. So, if you are like me, and are put-off by the cover, give it a try anyway. It's a good book.
- If you enjoy suspenseful stories with complex characters and a touch of social commentary, this book is a must-read. Jeff, the protagonist, is a refreshing addition to the mystery genre—a sharp, determined waiter whose perspective offers both relatability and a unique vantage point. His journey from a casual observer to an active investigator is compelling, drawing the reader deeper into the labyrinth of lies that the club's elite try desperately to conceal.
At its heart, this book isn’t just a murder mystery; it’s a commentary on the price of power and the lengths people will go to maintain their facades. The ending is both satisfying and thought-provoking, leaving readers to ponder the true cost of living in such a world. It's a captivating ride from start to finish, full of surprises that will keep you guessing until the very last page.
- As a fan of cozy mysteries, this book was a delightful find. With Jeff, the astute server, diving into the secrets of the elite club, every twist kept me hooked. The rich setting and intriguing plot sparkled, although Jeff’s insider access was occasionally far-fetched. An entertaining read!
- This captivating murder mystery pulls you into the opulent yet treacherous world of a country club, where a resourceful waiter becomes an unlikely detective, uncovering deadly secrets and shocking betrayals that will keep you hooked until the very last page.
- This is a thrilling whodunit that pulls you into a world of glamour, power, and deadly secrets.
Jeff, a sharp-witted waiter with a knack for observation, finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery when a wealthy businessman is found dead at the exclusive country club. The story’s twists and turns kept me guessing, and the opulent setting adds a fascinating contrast to the darker undercurrents of deceit and corruption.
- Opulence concealing dark secrets
Social intrigue, wealth, and power are on the surface of Murder at the Country Club with Inquisitive Jeff. The conversations that main character Jeff catches while serving drinks and hors d’oeuvres reveal the sinister exploitation that is taking place right under their noses. Staff and club patrons alike are shaken to the core when Jeff discovers a body in Victor Langston’s office. Was the death of natural causes or did someone have a motive to cause him harm?
Jeff turns amateur detective in an attempt to put together the pieces. By keeping his eyes and ears open he was able to identify vindictive individuals who held grudges. Who was having an affair with whom? Who was being blackmailed, and why? The mystery only intensifies when Jeff is confronted by two bouncers in an empty parking garage. The murder mystery with various characters reminded me of the game of Clue.
Author James Landsaw drew on his years spent working at a country club to build realistic characters and settings. There is a realistic camaraderie between Jeff, the bartender Carlos, Jasmine, Rachel and the others. I enjoyed watching Jeff’s character development from lowly waiter to detective to a philanthropist.
What I didn’t like about the story was an overabundance of thoughts from the main character. His use of present tense during the action seemed artificial. Could also benefit from another round of proofreading. Still very entertaining and well worth the read.
- This captivating murder mystery pulls you into the dangerous and unpredictable world of the upper crust country club elite, where an unlikely detective, otherwise a staff bartender, unearths sinister enigmas and shocking betrayals. This fast-paced story is engaging and will keep your interested from start to finish. Hard to put this one down.
- This book was a fun and quick read, perfect for fans of classic whodunits. The country club setting provided an interesting backdrop for the mystery, and I enjoyed the cast of characters, each with their own secrets and motives. Jeff, the observant waiter, was a likeable and relatable protagonist. I appreciated the author's clear and concise writing style, which kept the story moving at a good pace.
- Murder at the Country Club: With Inquisitive Jeff serves up an intriguing whodunit that blends sharp wit with high-society scandal. James Landsaw crafts a mystery as rich and layered as the crème brûlée served in the club’s dining room, with Jeff—a waiter turned accidental detective—proving that curiosity is not only deadly but also highly entertaining.
The story’s strength lies in its setting: the country club, with its blend of glamour and hidden rot, is the perfect backdrop for murder. Jeff’s perspective as a staff member offers a refreshing contrast to the usual upper-crust sleuths of the genre, providing both a boots-on-the-ground view of the drama and a hefty dose of sarcasm. Watching him peel back the layers of Victor Langston’s demise, while dodging gossip, lies, and the occasional threat, keeps the pages turning.
The only hiccup? The pacing occasionally slows when the story indulges in overly detailed descriptions of club politics or Jeff’s internal monologues. While it adds depth, it sometimes detracts from the urgency of solving the crime.
Still, this is a delightfully clever mystery with enough twists to keep even seasoned armchair detectives guessing. Whether you’re in it for the secrets, the suspense, or Jeff’s sharp observations about the absurdity of high society, Murder at the Country Club won’t disappoint. Just don’t trust anyone offering you a drink—especially not at this club.
- This reminds me of Glass Onion, Knives Out, and Clue. Even a touch of Orient Express. A who dunnit. It read well and fast. Good, surprising ending. My negatives are that it needs more editing and about half of the word 'Jeff' needs to be removed. Way too many.
